Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is Play by Mail?
Turn-based games where players send moves and get results on a schedule, usually by email, instead of playing live online. Printed sheets and physical mail are still available when a Game Master turns them on.
-
What does playbymail.games provide?
Tools to design games, run them as a Game Master, and play them. Turns are processed automatically. Most play happens by email; paper is optional.
-
Is this a real-time online game?
No. Games move on a turn schedule. You get a notice (usually by email), take your turn, and wait for the next one.
-
How does turn processing work?
You open your turn sheet from an email link and submit it online. The platform processes those submissions. If physical delivery is on, the Game Master can print sheets, upload scans of filled-in forms, and review the results.
-
How do I get started as a Game Designer?
Sign up, open Game Designers, create a game, build its content, playtest, then publish.
-
How do I get started as a Game Master?
Sign up, open Game Masters, subscribe to a game, create an instance, choose how players receive turns, and run it with automated processing.
-
How do I get started as a Player?
Find a game with open spots, join with your name and email, and get your turn sheets by email (or by post if that game allows it). No prior signup or login is required — you play from the links in those emails.

How does PlayByMail use AI?
AI assists computer-opponent decision making when a computer opponent is chosen. A computer opponent is given no more information than any other player at the table, in the scene, or in the scenario would have about their opponents.
During the beta phase, art in the existing demo games is AI-produced. It is intended to be replaced by human-created art throughout. The platform owners are greatly concerned with the potential loss of human skills in writing and art and fully support efforts to curtail that loss. That said, while the platform is still heavily in development and changing often, paying professional artists cannot be justified — it is simply not affordable yet.
When the time comes, professional human-created art will replace the AI-generated art, and credit will be given where it is due. In the Designer Studio, uploaded art will include optional credits and artist links.
